SIM Only FAQs
What is a SIM card?
SIM stands for ‘Subscriber Identity Module’. It is the small card that slots into your handset, and contains your account information and personal number. It allows your handset to connect to a mobile network so that it can then make calls, send texts, and use the internet. SIM cards can also be used to store (limited) amounts of data, such as phone numbers and some text messages.
I'd like a Pay As You Go SIM, but I need a handset too! What do I do?
If you need a handset but don't want to be locked into a monthly plan, you can take a look at our great PAYG handsets. Purchasing a mobile phone outright to use with a SIM may be a particularly good option if you're not keen on a monthly bill, or you're waiting for your favourite manufacturer's newest flagship to be released.
Does my handset have to be unlocked?
In order to use a SIM card (which is automatically linked to your chosen network), your handset must either be completely unlocked, or purchased from the same network. If your current handset was not purchased from three, and are unsure as to whether it is unlocked, the best thing to do would be to get in touch with your old network to check. At Three, all of our handsets are now sold unlocked, giving you more freedom after your contract ends.
Are the SIM Only contracts as flexible as regular tariffs?
Regular tariffs tend to have a contract length of 24 months, whereas our SIM only tariffs range from 1 month (rolling) contracts, to 12 months, to 24 months. And our SIM only tariffs are both varied enough to suit any type of mobile phone user, and at great prices to ensure the very best value.
Can I use any SIM in my handset?
Depending on the type of phone you have, you will need one of three SIM types: Standard, Micro or Nano. If you are unsure which SIM you require, simply look at the handset manufacturer’s website.
Why are SIM sizes different?
The reason for different SIM sizes is simply due to individual handsets. As with most technologies, mobile phones are getting slimmer and more compact, whilst gaining greater processing power, generally speaking. In an attempt to save space, manufacturers have been able to cut the size of SIM cards, while still retaining all of the information they are able to hold. For this reason, a good rule of thumb is the newer the handset, the smaller the SIM required. This isn’t always the case however, so it’s always a good idea to check with the manufacturer as to what size you need before purchasing.
What do the plans include?
Our SIM plans all include the physical SIM (and, of course, the phone number to go along with it if you do not wish to keep your old number), as well as a generous allowance of minutes, texts and data. Some of the plans offer added benefits such as tethering and free Three-to-Three minutes.
Do I need a special 4G SIM card?
As long as you have a 4G-ready device, you will be upgraded to 4G as soon as it is rolled out in your area. So there will be no need to deal with trying to get a new SIM in order to access amazingly fast internet speeds on Three.
