4G-Ready Phones on Three Clearance
Why should I care about 4G?
4G is the next evolution of speedy mobile internet – a step up from the regular 3G coverage that most smartphones currently provide. Our 4G network even has the potential to be faster than even home broadband connections, which on average stands at 9.6Mbps, compared to the potential 50Mbps that’s achievable on 4G! Quicker internet speeds means that you are able to stream HDvideo without it buffering, play online games, browse the web faster, and download (& play) apps faster than ever before!
Can I get 4G?
The Three 4G rollout is on target to provide cover for 98% of the UK population by the end of 2015. To check 4G coverage in your area, take a look at our Coverage Checker. If you find that we haven’t caught up to your area just yet, don’t worry! Buying a 4G-Ready handset is still a great future-proofing investment, as you’ll still get great Advanced 3G coverage, and you will auto-connect to whatever the best network speed is in the areas you visit – whether that’s 3G or 4G!
Which 4G-Ready handsets are available?
Since most of our handsets are already 4G-capable, we have decided to list a few of our favourites below. To see the rest, simply take a look at our All Phones page here on the Three Clearance website.

4G FAQ List
What is 4G?
4G is a mobile technology term which stands for ‘Fourth Generation’, and leads on from previous ‘3G’ and ‘2G’ incarnations. 4G services will make surfing the web much quicker on mobile handsets, tablets and laptops, with speeds close to those available using home Broadband.
What’s the difference between 4G and 3G?
Apart from being two different ‘Generations’ of mobile broadband (internet) technology, the primary difference between 3G and 4G, is that the latter is capable of much faster upload (e.g. posting pictures to Facebook) and download (e.g. keeping up to date with your social media and browsing the web) speeds. Also, 4G’s data transfers have a wider frequency range, allowing it a more reliable connection than 3G – preventing dropped calls and improving quality of streamed content to your phone without interruptions of service or lag. (Although until the 4G rollout is completed at the end of 2015, performance between 3G and 4G depends on your current location and signal strength).
Does 4G cost more than 3G?
Some network operators charge their customers extra for upgrading to 4G. That isn’t the case here at Three, however. Upgrading to a 4G plan has absolutely no extra cost attached. In fact, when you purchase a 4G-capable handset, you’re automatically upgraded to using our super-fast 4G network! And because we offer true All-You-Can-Eat data plans, you’ll be able to access the internet, stream content or download to your heart’s content – all at amazing 4G super-speeds!
Which handset do I need in order to get 4G?
Good news! All of the handsets currently available here on Three Clearance are 4G compatible. So go ahead and browse our full range without having to worry about getting the most out of our fantastic data plans.
Does 4G work in other countries?
Because 4G networks haven’t yet been rolled out in all places in all countries, the best way to answer this question is to look up which frequencies are most prevalent in the country you will be visiting, and then match them to your device’s capabilities by looking at your handset specifications (which can be found on the manufacturer’s website).
Does 4G use more data than 3G?
4G does not use more data than 3G for any given task. (For example, a task requiring 1MB of data whilst connected to a 3G network, will still only require 1MB of data when on a 4G network). You may end up using more data whilst using 4G than 3G as a result of being able to stream media and browse websites faster and more efficiently. Thankfully, we offer a range of plans here at Three, including great All-You-Can-Eat data plans for customers who are planning to watch every episode of Downton Abbey back to back.
